Antique Murphy Chair


⭕ This is an antique chair from the Murphy Chair Company, Detroit, Mi. It belonged to my grandmother who was born in 1888. The chair is very solid and in great condition. The chair appears to be quarter-sawn producing the very distinctive grain pattern called tiger oak, or tiger eye. The label on the seat bottom reads, Murphy Chair Company, 5158, Detroit, Mi

In 1872, C.H. Dunks, a manufacturer of bed springs, sold the business to Michael J. Murphy, a Canadian. He and his younger brother, James F. Murphy (who joined the firm in 1883), primarily manufactured chairs. They moved the business to Owensboro, KY in 1919. Since this chair is labeled Detroit, it must have been made sometime between 1872 and 1919.

Most recently, the chair has been used in a guest bedroom. Just downsizing and time to let it go. $35.
